MASON CITY - Backed by a trio of 39s, the Mason City golf team bested the Bobcat golfers Tuesday by nine strokes and claimed the Central Iowa Conference's Northern Division title.
Jared Rowe, Ben Butler and Alex Noto shared medalist honors as the Mohawks beat Marshalltown 160-169 at the par-36 Highland Park Golf Course. Marshalltown's best score was a 40 from senior Connor Johnson.
"We were outplayed by a solid Mason City squad tonight," MHS coach Lucas Johnson said. "The cold, wind and rain made it a tough day to score well. I give Mason City a lot of credit for having three guys break 40 in those conditions.
"Connor played another nice round. He started off with a double bogey on his first hole, but played the next eight holes to 2-over-par and finished a stroke out of medalist honors."
The other three counting scores for the Bobcats (2-2, 2-1) included junior Michael Schrempf and sophomores Sam Weatherman and Brant McKibben. Schrempf and Weatherman both carded 42s, while McKibben shot a 45.
Brandin Chaloupek's 46 and Beau Ragland's 50 were the other two varsity scores for Marshalltown.

MASON CITY (160) - Jared Rowe 39, Ben Butler 39, Alex Noto 39, David Mejia 43, Jordan Rowe 43, Branden Lewerke 50.

"We have some guys battling their swings right now," Johnson said. "Every golfer goes through stretches where they're not quite hitting the ball the way they'd like and that's a natural part of the game. Ideally it doesn't happen during one of the key weeks in the season, but we'll fight through it.
"After back-to-back meets, it'll be good to get on the practice tee tomorrow and find our groove again."
Mason City also got a pair of 43s from David Mejia and Jordan Rowe, while Branden Lewerke rounded out the Mohawk varsity with a 50.
The Mohawk junior varisty squad also beat Marshalltown on Tuesday.
