MASON CITY - The Marshalltown girls swim team's storied rivalry with Mason City added another compelling chapter Tuesday.

Though this thriller found the Bobcats on the short end. The Mohawks claimed first and third in the final event - the 400-yard freestyle relay - to overtake MHS 52-50. Marshalltown, which won just three of 12 varsity races, entered the finale with a 47-43 lead.

Mason City's 400 freestyle relay quartet of Samantha Kraft, McClaren Rodriguez, Crystal Florman and Jenna Cornick cruised to victory in 3 minutes, 47.12 seconds - more than six seconds ahead of MHS.

Due to the Mohawks' four-lane pool, teams were limited to just two entries per event.

Emily Vest, Chloe Kuehner, Therese Kuhlman and Raechel Hannam gave the Bobcats an early burst, claiming the 200 medley relay in 2:01.39. Marshalltown's next victory didn't come until the diving portion where Phoebe Lynk (176.55 points) and Megan McHenry (141.10) swept the top two spots. Leah Barkema added the Bobcats' last win, taking the 100 freestyle in 56.87.

Other individual runner-up finishes included Hayley Lillibridge in the 200 freestyle (2:10.22) and 500 freestyle (5:53.46), Kuehner in the 200 individual medley (2:24.98), Barkema in the 50 freestyle (26.03), Kuhlman in the 100 butterfly (1:06.42), Vest in the 100 backstroke (1:08.27) and Hannam in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.75).
