STATE CENTER - The BCLUW volleyball team had to rally from an early deficit and was forced to bounce back from a decisive loss in game four, but the Comets came through with a five-set North Iowa Cedar League West Division victory over rival West Marshall on Tuesday night.
Nicole Montgomery tallied 13 kills, Nicolette Simpson delivered 23 assists and Mallory Vawter added 24 digs as the Comets knocked off the Trojans on the road, 23-25, 26-24, 25-22, 14-25, 15-13.
West Marshall led the fifth and final set 9-5 before eventually losing.
Kendall Scurr also had 10 kills, 15 digs and was 11-of-12 in serving. Hannah Sams and Haley Veldhouse each contributed seven kills, while Vawter had six kills and was 19-of-22 in serving. Olivia Calloway finished with 17 digs, five blocks, four kills and was 18-of-20 in serving.
On the night, the Comets (3-6, 1-2) were 93-of-104 from behind the service line. Bobbi Paper was 21-of-23 and also contributed 18 assists.
West Marshall (3-12, 0-3) was led by Brandy Wilkey's 15 kills and four aces. She also was 25-for-25 from behind the service line.
Jennifer Davis finished with 13 kills. Alarie Craven dished out 39 assists and Claire Underwood pitched in 26 digs. Blair Bailey turned in 17 digs as well.
West Marshall will next play in the Waukee Tournament against West Des Moines Valley, Ankeny and Bedford on Saturday. Action begins at 9 a.m.
The Comets will head to East Marshall on Tuesday. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
Grundy Center 3, AGWSR 0
GRUNDY CENTER - Another sweep in NICL West play pushed the Class 2A No. 8 Spartans' conference win streak to 25 matches.
The Spartans got 13 kills, 12 digs and eight aces from Stephanie Faust during a 25-10, 25-16, 25-5 victory over AGWSR on Tuesday. Faust also was 28-for-28 in serving.
Riley Sents added 25 digs, Alyssa Mathews delivered 19 assists and six aces and Katie Lindeman and Noel Saak had seven and six kills, respectively, in the win.
The Spartans (11-1, 3-0) were 67-of-73 and had 17 aces from behind the service line. Mathews was 16-of-17, Sents was 9-of-10 and Piper Johanns was 11-for-11 with one ace.
Peyton Ralston finished with nine digs and nine assists as well.
Before the win over the Cougars, the Spartans also scored two impressive wins at the Aplington-Parkersburg Tournament over the weekend.
After going 2-1 in pool play, Grundy Center beat Williamsburg 2-0 in the semifinals and then won the championship with a 2-1 win over Class 4A No. 4 West Delaware. The only loss on the day came against West Delaware in pool play.
The Cougars (3-8, 1-3) were led by Ashley Sicard's five kills Tuesday. Olivia Ingledue also had 17 digs and Kim Ellingson delivered a team-high five assists. AGWSR was 29-of-32 in serving and Ellingson and Danielle Henning had the only two aces. Henning also had three kills, five assists and six digs.
South Tama 3, South Hardin 2
ELDORA - The Trojans pulled off a wild five-set win over the rival Tigers on the road.
Led by Trisha Walz's 18 kills and Madison Baack's 27 assists, the Trojans beat South Hardin 25-15, 25-21, 22-25, 14-25, 15-13.
The fifth set was tied at 11 before three straight points from the Trojans gave the visitors match point. South Hardin (6-8, 4-1) cut its deficit to just one point but served the ball out of bounds on the final point of the match. It was the fifth straight win for South Tama (7-3, 4-0).
Paige Van Dyk had 11 kills in the win, while Sam Holtz contributed nine and Tori Appelgate added seven.
Walz had three of the Trojans' 11 aces. Holtz, Van Dyk and Belle Tyynismaa all served up two aces as well. Walz also had a team-high 27 digs.
The Trojans next play in the West Delaware Tournament on Saturday. Action starts at 9 a.m. South Hardin heads to the Boone Tournament.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck 3, East Marshall 0
LE GRAND - Britney Keller recorded six kills and Jenny Schildroth tallied 14 assists and eight digs as Gladbrook-Reinbeck denied East Marshall, 25-17, 25-23, 25-18, in North Iowa Cedar League West action Tuesday.
Alyssa Christopher came up with 14 digs, while Hanna Christopher and Bailea Evenson each tacked on four kills for the Rebels (2-6, 1-1). Evenson (13-of-14) and Shelton Hatch (12-of-14) both served up two aces and Schildroth added another, while converting all 21 attempts on serve. G-R snapped a four-match losing skid.
Kelsea Anderson powered the Mustangs with seven kills, 18 digs and three aces (18-of-18 on serve). Claire Johnson had six kills, two blocks and 21 digs, Meriel Leavy added four kills and a block. Ashley Allen served up a pair of aces, while converting 14-of-16 on serve along with 10 assists. Madisen Hinegardner chipped in 23 digs and Haley Long dished out 12 assists as the Mustangs (2-7, 0-3) lost their second in a row.
East Marshall hosts Grinnell Monday and BCLUW Tuesday. The Rebels host their own tournament Saturday, before entertaining AGWSR Tuesday.
GMG 3, CAL 0
GARWIN - Caitlin Appelgate's 10 kills and nine aces led the GMG volleyball team to a three-game sweep against CAL on Tuesday night.
The Wolverines won the match, 25-18, 25-8, 25-21, as Appelgate also had five digs and three solo blocks.
Helping out Appelgate in the victory was a host of Wolverines. Olivia Barritt finished with 14 kills, four aces and three blocks, while Jennifer Borota had 14 digs and Mikaella Koster added 15 assists, four kills and two digs. Abigail Duden also had 10 digs and two aces, while Mackenzie Burt contributed six aces, three digs and16 assists.
The Wolverines next play at home against Meskwaki Settlement on Tuesday.
Colo-NESCO 3, Clarksville 0
COLO - Ending its four-match slide in a hurry, the Colo-NESCO volleyball team swept past Clarksville, 25-4, 25-14, 25-6, in Iowa Star Conference action Tuesday.
Madison Farren had 10 kills and Caitlyn Riese tallied eight to lead the Royals (6-8, 2-0) up front. Brittnee Packer distributed 12 assists, while McKenna Farren had 10 as the Royals handed Clarksville (2-11, 0-2) its fifth straight defeat.
Colo-NESCO hosts North Tama Thursday. The Redhawks defeated the Royals, 21-11, 21-11, at the South Tama Tournament on Aug. 31.
