A bridge in need of some attention north of Haverhill will be replaced next year.

The Marshall County Supervisors approved an agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation to get the wheels in motion on the replacement of the bridge located on Parker Avenue just north of 255th Street, which is south of Marshalltown.

Preliminary estimates price the project at $450,000 with 80 percent of the funding expected from federal sources and 20 percent from state or local sources.

This bridge on Parker Avenue north of Haverhill and south of Marshalltown is in line for replacement next year.

"It's deteriorating," said Paul Geilenfeldt, county engineer, said of the condition of the bridge.

The project will be let out to bid next spring with construction planned for next summer. The new bridge has yet to be designed but Geilenfeldt said it's likely it will be a concrete slab structure.

In other action, the board approved a $402,049 bid from Shomo Madsen Insurance (EMC) to provide property, casualty and workers compensation insurance for the county for the next year. It was the lowest bid received by the county and the company is currently serving in this role for the county.

"We've been nothing but happy with their service," said County Auditor Dawn Williams.

Another annual premium bid from Independent Insurance Services came in at $430,234.

County Treasurer Jarret Heil notified the board that the first half installment of county property taxes are due Monday. Heil said taxes have been coming in steady this year.

The supervisors recognized two employees for their service Tuesday. Andy Rhodes has spent 15 years in the engineer's office and Mindy Kruse has spent five years in the sheriff's office.
