Police warn of computer repair scam

September 27, 2013

A local resident was robbed of more than $300 after someone posing as a computer technician gained access to the victim's bank account.

Police say the victim reported Thursday receiving a call from someone claiming to be a technician from Microsoft calling to repair an error message on the victim's computer. Sometime during the connection the suspects were able to gain control of the victim's computer using the Internet connection.

The suspects, which may be working outside of the United Staes, were able to access bank account records from the victim and removed more than $300 from the victim's bank account.

Capt. Mike Hanken, of the Marshalltown Police Department, said he recommends being very wary of dealing with anyone calling with this type of offer, and to only deal with reputable businesses. If you feel that you have been a victim of this type of crime, report it as soon as you can to law enforcement, he said.
