MHS swim team can’t stay with Aquagirls

NEWTON - Marshalltown senior Leah Barkema claimed the Bobcats' lone win in the pool Monday night.

Barkema won the 50 freestyle in 28.83 seconds but Newton-Colfax-Mingo-Pella dominated the night at home, winning 109-61. The Aquagirls took the first three positions in the 100 butterfly and also went 1-2 in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Marshalltown senior Chloe Kuehner was runner-up in two individual races and also helped the Bobcats to a second place finish in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

Kuehner ended up second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:41.54 and also was runner-up in the 400 freestyle with a time of 5:07.14.

The other second-place finishes came from Hayley Lillibridge in the 200 freestyle and Therese Kuhlman in the 100 breaststroke. The 200 medley relay included Kuehner, Raechel Hannam, Kuhlman and Barkema, while the 200 freestyle relay featured Kuhlman, Lillibridge, Barkema and Kuehner.

The Bobcats' best event was the 400 freestyle as MHS finished 2-3-4. Coming in behind Kuehner was Melisa Fonseca and Carolina Freire-Vales.

Emily Vest, Freire-Vales, Emily Barske and DarC Vopava came in third in the 200 medley relay, Kuhlman came across in third in the 200 IM and Lillibridge was third in the 100 freestyle. Barkema also was third in the 100 backstroke, while the foursome of Fonseca, Maggie Carnahan, Lillibridge and Freire-Vales also finished third in the 400 freestyle relay.

Fourth-place finishes were claimed by Barske in the 100 butterfly, Vest in the 100 backstroke and Freire-Vales in the 100 breaststroke. Vopava, Carnahan, Ashley Hala and Fonseca also took fourth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Carly Collville and Hannah Scotton were both part of four winning events for NCMP.

Colville won the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle and also swam to wins in the 400 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Scotton also was a part of both winning freestyle relay teams and hit the wall first in the 100 butterfly and the medley relay.

Samantha Hedrick claimed three first-place tallies. She won the 200 IM and also helped the Aquagirls take first in the 400 freestyle relay and the medley relay.

The Bobcats will return to action tonight when they face Charles City at the MHS pool.

The head-to-head meet kicks off at 5:30 p.m.
