Murder investigation underway in Marshalltown

Two men are being held as material witnesses for at murder at 502 N. Fourth Avenue Tuesday morning.

Jeremy A. Gartin, 30, and Max E. Nelson, Jr. 55, are being held as material witnesses.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed.

Gartin is also being held on a criminal charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

Police say they were called to the residence about a suspicious death Tuesday morning. The death his still being investigated and evidence and information have been collected that confirms criminal action led to this death, police said.

No other people of interest are being sought in connection with this investigation.

Nelson, the former publisher of the Marshall County Sun, was arrested on felony drug charges in May 2012. A trial in that case has been postponed several times.

Online court records show Gartin has a long criminal history including felony charges of willful injury, criminal mischief, possession of firearm and burglary.
