Shown is a sign marking the route of the historic Glacier Trail near the intersection of Hardin county roads S62 and D55 near Gifford recently. Initially, the auto trail began in St. Louis and ended in Glacier National Park, Mont., a total of 1,846 miles, according to a Iowa Department of Transportation website. The trail was registered with the Iowa Highway Commission on Sept. 6, 1921. Its southernmost point in Iowa was Bloomfield, moving north through Ottumwa, Oskaloosa, Grinnell, Marshalltown, Eldora, Hampton and Mason City.
