Musicians from the Bach Society of Minnesota will be teaming with professional jazz musicians from the Twin Cities to bring a unique concert to Marshalltown at 8 p.m. Oct. 24 at Elmwood Country Club.
The concert is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by Twentieth Century Club and Tuesday Musical Club, with support from Ace Precision, International.
The "Bach & Jazz" concert will include performances of Bach's music on historically accurate musical instruments - harpsichord, viola da gamba and Baroque violin - paired with contemporary jazz works. The jazz group features guitar, upright bass, saxophone and percussion. The musicians will provide commentary to help the audience learn about the music and recognize their similarities and differences.

In the words of the performers, "Often the most interesting ideas come from putting together two things that aren't normally juxtaposed. A great piece of fruit and flavorful cheese each taste good by themselves. But when eaten together, they both bring a new dimension to the other, resulting in much more than simply the sum of the parts. Likewise our pairing of Baroque music with jazz will not only highlight each style, but will create new perspectives on both."
"Bach & Jazz" concerts have been performed for the past two years in the Twin Cities area, and have been featured on Minnesota Public Radio. Each of the performers is highly accomplished and has studied and performed widely.
