JOHNSTON - The Marshalltown girls' swimming squad was denied a state diving qualifier for the third year in a row.

None of the Bobcats' three divers finished with an 11-dive total high enough at Thursday's regional meet at Summit Middle School to advance as an at-large qualifier to next Friday's state diving competition at the Marshalltown Community YMCA.

MHS has not had a state diving qualifier since four-time participant Amy Stiehl made her last showing in 2010.

In all, 11 divers advanced to state out of the 18-team Johnston meet. Morgan Rafferty of West Des Moines Valley and Emily Moore of Johnston gained automatic berths with their regional-leading finishes, and nine others advanced on the strength of their 11-dive totals.

No Marshalltown results were made available as of press time.

Two-time defending state champion Maggie James of Ames was the top scoring qualifier across the state, finishing with a 512.65 total. Carolyn Simon of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the 30th and final qualifier (317.3).
