Autumn leaves

Most of the maple, basswood and cottonwoods have dropped their leaves in this Iowa River valley photo taken on Thursday. However, the oaks and hickories on Mormon Ridge are holding onto the colors for a bit longer. Soon they will also succumb to the inevitable approach of winter. Day lengths are shortening by an average of two minutes per day. This signal is what deciduous trees use to prepare themselves for another winter season.
