CEDAR FALLS - Returning home from a road loss to Ohio, the Northern Iowa men's basketball team received a boost from its bench in an 86-52 rout over Coe College Monday at the McLeod Center.
Senior forward Chip Rank led the effort with a career-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting in just 13 minutes as the Panthers (1-1) strung together a 21-2 run late in the first half to pull away. Marvin Singleton corralled a career-best 13 rebounds off the bench as UNI's reserves outscored Coe's 57-21.
Rank had seven points during the Panthers' first-half surge including a layup that stretched the gap to 43-23 with 1:27 left in the opening stanza. The Kohawks never drew closer than 17 the rest of the way as JT Vonderhaar paced the visitors with 10 points and Matt Daoust had 8.
Nate Buss added 11 points for the Panthers and Matt Morrison had 10 as UNI shot 49 percent (31-of-63) from the field, while limiting Coe to 17 field goals at a 34 percent clip.
UNI had 11 players log at least 12 minutes and held a 38-18 advantage for points in the paint, leading by as many as 36 with 2 minutes to play.
The Panthers travel to George Mason (1-0) on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
