CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Northern Iowa senior Tyler Sievertsen has been named the College Football Performance Awards National Placekicker of the Week for the second time this season.
Sievertsen was 3-for-3 kicking field goals in the Panthers' 22-20 win over Youngstown State on Saturday, including a successful 34-yard boot for the go-ahead points as time expired.
Sievertsen on Sunday was recognized as the Missouri Valley Football Conference's Special Teams Player of the week for the second time this year as well.
Christofferson's big day yields reward
IRVING, Tex. - With more performances like Sunday, the rest of the nation will soon take notice of Iowa State's Hallie Christofferson.
The senior forward was named this season's first Big 12 Player of the Week after a career-high 32 points and 11 rebounds in the Cyclones' 84-55 win over North Dakota. It's her second-career weekly honor after garnering Freshman of the Week honors in 2010.
Christofferson's 32 points tied for the 10th-most scored in ISU history and marked her 12th career double-double. The Exira grad shot 11-for-18 from the field, tying a career-high in field goals made and also went 7-of-8 from the line.
The Cyclones (1-0) return to Hilton Coliseum Wednesday to take on South Dakota (1-1) at 7 p.m.
Carter collects MVC's weekly honor
ST. LOUIS - Drake senior Richard Carter posted the top individual scoring game in the country, and on Monday the Missouri Valley Conference honored him as its men's basketball Player of the Week.
Carter gained the league's weekly honor after tallying a career-high 38 points in the Bulldogs' 61-59 season-opening win Saturday at Illinois-Chicago. It tied for the 12th-highest single-game scoring performance in school history, and the most by a Bulldog since 1996-97.
Carter shot 12-for-17 from the field, including 2-of-4 from 3-point land, and was 12-of-12 at the free-throw line.
Drake returns to action tonight with its home opener against Iowa Wesleyan. Tip-off time is 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast regionally on Mediacom.
Big 12 selects Cyclones Kane, Long
AMES - Iowa State guards Naz Long and DeAndre Kane have both been honored as weekly men's basketball award recipients from the Big 12 Conference.
In his first career start Sunday against UNC-Wilmington, Long scored a career-best 26 points on 8-of-11 shooting from 3-point range en route to being named the Big 12's Player of the Week. Long was 9-for-12 from the field overall, and his eight treys tied for third-most in school history.
Kane came up with 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in Sunday's home win. The senior guard had just one turnover and was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.
The Cyclones (1-0) host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. tonight at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.
Drake's Wendell gains league award
ST. LOUIS - Drake women's basketball player Lizzy Wendell has been chosen as the Missouri Valley Conference's Newcomer of the Week.
Wendell, a freshman, came off the bench to tally 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal in the Bulldogs' season-opening win over Creighton. She added eight points, three boards, three blocks, two assists and a steal in Sunday's loss at Wisconsin.
