CEDAR FALLS - Northern Iowa defensive back Ray Mitchell reeled in two interceptions and returned them both for touchdowns against Western Illinois Saturday.
On Monday, the junior Panther was hauling in accolades for his performance in UNI's 28-13 home win over the Leathernecks.
Mitchell was named the College Football Performance Awards National Defensive Player of the Week and National Defensive Back Player of the Week, while also garnering Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The Irving, Texas native made his first interception of the game at the 4:09 mark of the second quarter and raced 44 yards for his first career touchdown. With 23 seconds left in the first half, he grabbed his second pick and returned it 72 yards for another score, stretching the lead to 28-3.
His 116 interception return yards set a new UNI-Dome record and the Kansas transfer also made four solo tackles in the game.
