CANCUN, Mexico - Melissa Dixon matched the Iowa single-game record with seven 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 32 points and the Mayan Division MVP, leading the Hawkeyes to a whopping 102-65 win over UNC-Wilmington on Saturday at the Cancun Challenge.
Dixon shot 11-of-18 from the field, including 7-of-13 from 3-point range, and added three free throws to her career-best scoring night. She averaged 22.3 points per game during Iowa's 3-0 run at the Challenge, making five 3-pointers per game.
Saturday's tilt was barely a contest. After some early back-and-forth scoring, the Hawkeyes ran out to a 50-28 halftime lead sparked by a 19-0 run. The Seahawks (1-7) went scoreless for more than 4 minutes as Iowa took its lead from one to 20, getting two 3-pointers from Dixon during the surge.
The junior guard Dixon scored 16 points in each half. Bethany Doolittle had 14 of her 18 in the first half. Ally Disterhoft had 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Alexa Kastanek chipped in 12 points off the bench.
Samantha Logic had 11 assists and was named all-tournament team as well for the Hawkeyes.
Kelva Atkins tallied 19 points, seven assists and five steals on her way to all-tournament selection for UNC-Wilmington. Ryan Flowers had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Nagaiyyah Teague added 10 points in the Seahawks' fifth straight loss.
Iowa's next game will be in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, as the Hawkeyes host Syracuse on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.
Drake 90, Coastal Carolina 74
SEATTLE - Six players scored in double figures as the Drake women's basketball team had its season-best shooting performance, putting away Coastal Carolina 90-74 in the consolation game of the 2013 Delta Dental Thanksgiving Tournament.
Drake shot a season-high 50.7 percent from the field, going 34-for-67. The Bulldogs (3-4) went 14-for-30 from 3-point range with six different players cashing in for treys.
Caitlin Ingle scored 10 of her career-high 14 points off the bench in the first half, helping Drake capture a 42-32 lead at the intermission.
Kyndal Clark made a season-best five 3-pointers on her way to a team-leading 19 points for the Bulldogs. Liza Heap joined Ingle with 14 points, Lizzy Wendell had 13 and Emma Donahue had 10. Ashley Bartow tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
AJ Jordan led the Chanticleers (4-3) with 19 points, Angelica Henry had 15 and Alexx Puckett 14.
Drake returns home this week for a non-conference game with Idaho State on Thursday, entertaining the Bengals at 7:05 p.m. at the Knapp Center in Des Moines.
No. 23 Iowa St. 68, Auburn 57
LAS VEGAS - Hallie Christofferson and Seanna Johnson combined to score 35 points to lead No. 23 Iowa State to a 68-57 win over Auburn at the South Point Shootout Saturday.
Christofferson, scoring in double figures for the 64th time her career, led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Johnson added 17 points on 5 of 11 from the floor.
Jadda Buckley's 3-pointer extended the Cyclones' NCAA record streak of games with a 3-point basket to 587. Nicole Blaskowsky came off the bench to hit four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points.
Auburn (4-3) stayed close, trailing by one, 33-32 at halftime. Hasina Muhammad led the Tigers with 15 points, with Tyrese Tanner and Brandy Montgomery adding 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Iowa State (6-0) remained unbeaten by sweeping both games in Las Vegas. The Cyclones rolled over Eastern Washington, 88-60, Friday night.
