PELLA - West Marshall's potential tying jumper from the baseline rattled out as the Trojan boys' basketball team fell in its season-opening game, 52-50, to host Pella Christian on Monday night.
Matt Van Metre and Duncan Ferch shared game-high honors with 17 points for West Marshall, but the Trojans suffered a narrow defeat despite trailing by double-digits in the second half.
Trenton Keislar contributed 10 points, Reggie Gradwell had four and Elijah Streeter two as West Marshall opened its season with its first of seven consecutive road games.
Nate Haveman had 16 points and Sebastian Baugh added 10 for host Pella Christian, which led 42-34 entering the fourth quarter. West Marshall closed to within 51-50 with 2:30 left in the game, but the Trojans could not connect on their final chance to tie.
West Marshall crosses the NICL to face East Division newcomer Waterloo Columbus tonight in the second game of a girl/boy doubleheader.
