BELLE PLAINE - Both Marshalltown finalists were denied titles as the Bobcat wrestling team took sixth place out of eight teams at the Belle Plaine Tournament on Saturday.
Derek Mann at 170 pounds and Ben Rebik at 182 were both turned back in the final round at their respective weights. Marshalltown also had three third-place finishers and four fourth-place finishers en route to 124 points.
Union Community captured the team title with 228 points, just ahead of Mount Vernon's 222.5. Benton Community (141), Dike-New Hartford (138) and Hudson (132.5) all finished in front of the Bobcats, while HLV (36) and host Belle Plaine (18) rounded out the field.
Mann, ranked eighth in Class 3A, was defeated 9-7 by 2A No. 2 Trey Ryan of Mount Vernon in the title match. Mann had a first-period pin in his only other match to reach the finals.
Rebik scored a second-period pin and a 6-5 decision to reach the title bout at 182, but fell by major decision, 13-3, to Noah Huber of Hudson.
Third-place finishes for MHS went to Peyton Williams at 152, Josh Edel at 160 and Justus Bjelland at 195. Doston Harrelson (113), Reese Hageman (126), Josh Sowers (138) and Richard McDonald (220) each picked up fourth place as all 11 Bobcat wrestlers finished sixth or better.
Sowers' semifinal loss came to 2A's top-ranked Max Thomsen of Union, but it was a first-period pin. Williams went 3-1 on his trek to third place, while Edel and Bjelland both went 2-1.
The Bobcats host a double-dual for their home opener on Thursday night, entertaining Ankeny Centennial and Urbandale.
