Bill Patten, a farmer from rural Clemons, has announced his plan to run for the Marshall County Board of Supervisors.

The 67-year-old Republican is the first candidate to announce his campaign for one of the two supervisors seats up for election this year.

"I think everyone needs to step up and involve themselves in something in our community," Patten said. "I think I'm qualified to do it."

Patten has served in the county before as he is a member of the compensation board and board of adjustment. He has held elected office in the past as a school board member at Union-Whitten and later BCLUW school districts. He has also worked in crop insurance for the past 14 years.

Patten said if he were elected one of his main goals would be to listen to the people of the county. He also said the condition of the county's bridges and roads is of concern.

"We've got a lot of infrastructure situations that need to be well-monitored," Patten said.

He is still putting together his campaign committee, he said, but wanted to announce his candidacy early.

"I wanted to get my name out there," Patten said. "The rural people know me, but the people in town don't."

Patten calls himself a conservative when it comes to spending. Bill and his wife, Rosalee, have four children and three grandchildren.

Supervisor Deane Adams said he will not run again this year and fellow Supervisor Dave Thompson has yet to make an announcement on his plans. Supervisors are elected for four-year terms. Current Supervisor Denny Grabenbauer is not up for re-election this year.

The primary election will be June 3 with the general election falling on Nov. 4.

The filing period for county candidates is between March 3 and March 26. Nomination papers can be obtained from the county auditor's office or through the Iowa Secretary of State website at www.sos.iowa.gov/elections/candidates/index.html
