PLEASANT HILL - The Marshalltown wrestling team emerged with five placewinners from the Central Iowa Conference Invitational on Friday, led by third-place finishers Derek Mann and Ben Rebik.
Mann, ranked 10th at 170 pounds, opened the tournament with a pair of first-period pins. In the semifinal round, Mann lost a 9-8 decision in the closing seconds to Southeast Polk's Mason Kerr. Mann rebounded with a 9-0 major decision over Ottumwa's Isaiah Cox in the third-place match.
Rebik got a first-round bye before scoring a 5-4 decision to beat Ankeny's Dylan Johnson in the quarterfinals. Fifth-ranked Sam Cook pinned Rebik on his way to winning the 182-pound championship, but Rebik bounced back with a 5-0 victory over Kaleb Sents from Ames.
Both Josh Edel (160) and Justus Bjelland (195) placed fourth with 2-2 records for the day, while Peyton Williams (152) scored sixth place.
Edel won his opener by decision and followed it with a pinfall, but lost to top-ranked Isaiah Patton of Dowling Catholic in the semifinals. Edel found himself on top of Patton after a scramble situation yet trailed on the scoreboard, 8-6, only to lose a 10-6 decision. Indianola's Casey Crawford defeated Edel 9-4 in the third-place bout.
Bjelland posted two second-period pins before a narrow 3-2 decision went the way of Fort Dodge's Riley Prescott in the semifinals. In the third-place contest, Bjelland was pinned in the second period by seventh-ranked John Ware from Ankeny Centennial.
Williams went 3-2 en route to sixth at 152, winning three times by decision.
The Bobcats came out 13th in the final team standings from the 18-team invitational. Third-ranked Southeast Polk was the team champion with 235.5 points, followed by West Des Moines Valley (152.5) in second and a tie between Dowling Catholic and No. 9 Mason City for third (149). Fort Dodge (130) rounded out the top five.
Marshalltown now has a week off to prepare for its final dual meet of the season, next Saturday's 6:30 p.m. home match with Ames. The Bobcats go to districts on Feb. 8 at Newton.
