Community support continues for K-9 unit

March 25, 2014
Sgt. Melinda Ruopp, Marshalltown

On March 18-20, The Marshalltown Police Department K-9 Unit hosted the State of Iowa United States Police Canine Association's annual Narcotic Detector Dog Certification and Tracking Dog Certification. Fifty five K-9 units from around the state of Iowa as well as Moline, Ill. attended the event. The teams were tested in their ability to search indoor areas and vehicles to locate hidden narcotics to include marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin. A few teams were also tested in their abilities to follow a human scent to locate the track left behind by someone walking.
