ELDORA - The Grundy Center boys tennis team did not drop a set in defeating conference rival South Hardin on Friday night.
The Spartans swept all nine matches during a 9-0 win, highlighted by senior Ethan Hogle and sophomores Jarrett Stoner and Jared Clapp.
Hogle won his No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-1 over Ethan Balvanz, while Stoner and Clapp both took care of their opponents - Kieryn High and Daniel Talbot - 6-0, 6-0.
No. 1 Drew Sharp, a freshman, defeated South Hardin junior Micah Dorow 7-5, 6-0 and the Spartans also got straight-set wins from Andrew Day and Dalton Haverkamp.
In doubles, Sharp and Hogle beat Dorow and Balvanz 10-2, Day and Haverkamp took down Josiah Dorow and Ben Stanish 10-7 and Stoner and Clapp teamed up to beat High and Talbot 10-2.
"It was a tough night," said South Hardin coach Thomas Howe. "We have a lot of work to do with our serving and our ground strokes. I do continue to see improvement in the boys so hopefully their hard work will pay off in the upcoming meets."
Rebel girls edged by Independence
INDEPENDENCE - The Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls' soccer team dropped to 0-2 in the young season, falling 5-4 to host Independence on Thursday night.
The Class 1A No. 15-ranked Rebels got two goals apiece from Nicole Adair and Kyleah Dugan. Taylor Weida registered the only assist, while Bailea Evenson was credited with 11 saves in the loss.
Independence (2-0) was led by Jenna Price, who charted three goals and an assist. Alyssa Hawkins had two goals, Dana Tolle tallied two assists, and Suzi Grover also had an assist as the Mustangs prevailed. Mackenzie Thompson notched 17 saves in net for Independence.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck returns to action Monday at home against Denver before going back on the road Tuesday with a trip to South Tama/East Marshall.
North Tama golfers top rival GMG
TRAER - With four golfers shooting under 50 Thursday, the North Tama boys' golf team had little trouble against Iowa Star Conference rival GMG.
Taylor Dinsdale fired a 2-over-par 37 to claim medalist honors as the Redhawks topped the Wolverines, 174-190, at the Traer Golf Course.
Brandon Kaufman shot a 43, Scott Morrison carded a 46 and Bryce Hillman added a 48 for the Redhawks.
GMG was led by Chad Plaehn's 39. Brandon Weitzell also carded a 49 and the final two counting scores were Luke Petty's 50 and Austin Vaughn's 52.
The Redhawk girls were triumphant as well, winning 206-283. Jayde Vogeler was meet medalist with a 47, followed by teammate Rian Weida as runner-up with a 52. Nichole Jones shot a 53 and Kodi Hillman rounded out the team score with a 54.
Summer Langenbau shot a 64 to lead GMG in defeat. Olivia Barritt carded a 67, followed by Katie Airey (73) and Josie Claassen (79).
