We are in the final stages of developing an exciting experience for youth in Marshall
County, the Community Youth Teaching Garden. The Community Youth Teaching Garden is an excellent opportunity for youth (kindergarten through third grade, and fourth through sixth grade) to participate in hands-on research-based program that is proven to increase knowledge about gardening, effective in additional consumption of fruits and vegetables, and instrumental in creating opportunities for youth to engage in physical fitness.
There are many partnering organizations that are helping to create this needed experience such as: Marshall County Extension and Outreach, Central Iowa RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program), Marshall County Master Gardeners, Marshalltown Hy-Vee, Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA and Roger's University. The Community Youth Teaching Garden is truly becoming a community effort that will help youth learn how to make positive choices that will create a lasting effect on their health.
We now turn to you for help in completing this project. Currently, we have more than 250 youth who will be participating in day camps in June and July. We are asking for volunteers to assist with our summer day camps, as well as with our special interest garden club. There is no need to have previous education or gardening experience, as training will be provided.
If you are interested in making a difference in a young person's life, please contact us. We also encourage you to reach out to others that might have interest in this project by relaying our contact information.
