Iowa River Hospice under new direction
Tami Lichtenberg has been selected as the new Iowa River Hospice Executive Director. She took over the position March 24, coming into it from directing the Center for Healthcare Innovation at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.
A spark of passion for end-of-life care lit a fire in Lichtenberg when she volunteered as a hospital candy striper at 17.
Lichtenberg said, "At that time, I was caring for a patient who had chosen not to pursue extraordinary healing means. In her I saw the dignity of death and also saw the family needs at such a time. Hospice cares for both the patient and the family."
Moving to Iowa is a homecoming for Lichtenberg, her husband Kreg and their 2-year-old son Cooper. She has a sister in Pleasant Hill, and Kreg grew up in Storm Lake.
Making her a good fit for her new position is Lichtenberg's management and healthcare experience. Having earned a BA in journalism and an MA in management with a focus on organizational behavior and development, she began her career working with rural South Dakota hospitals, designing programs for the purpose of eliminating healthcare service gaps in these areas and obtaining program funding.
Continuing health care work, Lichtenberg moved on to manage a federal assistance program for 45 states that supported 1,300 Critical Access Hospitals (CAH). A CAH is a rural area hospital providing 24/7 emergency care and located at least 35 miles from another hospital, with no more than 25 inpatient beds and patient stays of no more than 96 hours,
Now Lichtenberg is at Iowa River Hospice.
"Iowa River Hospice has a strong, supportive team that has given the highest quality end-of-life care for many years," she said. "We'll continue to give the highest quality of hospice care, and we'll work on finding new services and skills to build on what we're already doing in order to meet healthcare gaps in the community."
