GRUNDY CENTER- Hillary Samo fired a 4-over-par 40 to lead the Grundy Center girls' golf team past South Hardin and West Marshall at Town and Country Golf Club Friday.
The Spartans (23-9) finished at 180, South Hardin shot 208 and West Marshall came through at 237. Josie McMartin added a 45 for Grundy Center, while Lindsay Freeman was a stroke back and Sarah Hockemeyer carded a 49.
"Finally, we popped the score I have been waiting for," Spartan coach Rick Schupbach said. "There were very strong winds but we played really well. ... Six scores under 51 or below is very encouraging."
McMartin claimed runner-up honors in her second meet back with a 43 and the Spartans shot 195 to trump Waterloo Columbus' 209 and Union's 252 in a triangular at South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo Thursday. Freeman shot a 50, while Samo and Ross added 51s. Grineski (55) and Hockemeyer (58) completed the Spartan squad.
The Spartans are scheduled to compete in a double dual against Aplington-Parkersburg and Iowa Falls-Alden Monday at 4:15 p.m. at Legend Trail Golf Club in Parkersburg.
Spartan boys rout Trojans, Bangasser medals again
GRUNDY CENTER - Spartan senior Lane Bangasser collected another medal Friday as his five-over 41 was the best score in Grundy Center's dual with West Marshall at Town and Country Golf Club.
Three other Spartan golfers shot better than 50 on the day as Grundy Center thumped the rival Trojans, 178-211.
Sam Thompson carded a 43 to earn runner-up honors, while Austin Burroughs turned in a 46 and Nick Saak finished with a 48. Tanner Pelzer carded a 50 and Jared Freeman added a 52 for the Spartans.
No one from West Marshall shot better than 50. Eric Newton led the way with a 50, while Clay Martin's 51 and Cole Gilmore and Ross Randall's 55 were the other three counting scores.
Both squads will participate in the BCLUW Comet Invite in Conrad on Monday. Action kicks off at 4:15 p.m.
Abkes, Schipper lead AGWSR past Comets
CONRAD - Owen Abkes and Derek Schipper both carded a 43 on Friday during the Cougars' easy win over BCLUW at Oakwood Golf Course.
Two other Cougars - Tanner Reents and Carson Lutterman - shot under 50 on the day as AGWSR routed the Comets, 177-199, in North Iowa Cedar League West Division action.
Abkes earned medalist honors, while Schipper was runner-up because of a card-back. Abkes had a par on No. 5 and birdied the par-5 No. 9. Schipper recorded a par on No. 2 and a par on No. 9.
Reents turned in a 45 and Lutterman had a 46 for the other two counting scores.
Grant Frazer led the Comets with a 45, while the other three counting scores were Blake Cooper and Josh Sharp's 51 and Tyler Lutes' 52.
Both squads play in the BCLUW Comet Invite on Monday. Action kicks off for the boys in Conrad at 4:15 p.m.
Barkema leads Comet girls past rival AGWSR
UNION - Abby Barkema carded the only score under 60 for the Comets but BCLUW had the more consistent four scores during its 240-247 win over NICL West rival AGWSR at the South Hardin Recreation Area Golf Course.
Barkema shot a 57, but the Comets overcame a 57 from Ashley Sicard and a 58 from Brooke Harrenstein because Laura Crawford (60), Abby McLean (60) and Ashley Wynn (63) were separated by just three strokes as the final three counting scores. BCLUW also got a 73 from Mikaela Simpson.
AGWSR had more scores under 60 but suffered the loss after its final two scores were a 63 from Maddie Deters and a pair of 69s from Kim Ventura and Kenzie Huisman.
Barkema earned medalist honors over Sicard because of a card-back. She recorded a double bogey on No. 9, while Sicard turned in a three-over par 8 on the final hole.
Both squads play in the BCLUW Comet Invite on Monday. Action kicks off for the girls in Union at 4:15 p.m.
GMG girls take third at Belle Plaine Invitational
BELLE PLAINE - The GMG girls golf team finished well behind the rest of the field in the Belle Plaine Invitatonal on Friday.
The Wolverines got a 118 from Summer Langenbau, but a 547 team score put GMG in third place in the three-team field. Des Moines East won the meet with a 435 and took the top three individual spots, while host Belle Plaine carded a team score of 475.
Langenbau was sixth overall but finished 14 strokes behind meet medalist Lauren Cockayne and runner-up Rachel Boothroyd, who both carded 104s. East's Cassie Carmichael had a 108 in third place.
Olivia Barritt carded a 124, Katie Airey finished with a 152 and Chandler Kendall added a 153 for the final three counting scores. Josie Claassen also had a 183 for the Wolverines.
Belle Plaine was led by Halle Van Scoyoc, who shot a 112 and finished in fourth overall.
