AMES - The Marshalltown boys' tennis team gave itself a chance to compete with long-time rival Ames after splitting the singles matches Tuesday.
But the Little Cyclones pulled away in doubles action, taking four of the five matches, and handed the Bobcats a 7-4 loss in Central Iowa Conference Northern Division play.
Kalei Platt lost to Andy Kim back in the Bobcat Invitational earlier this season but avenged that loss with a straight-set win over Kim on Tuesday. Marshalltown's top singles player won easily, too, claiming a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Andrew Walker and Vincent Zavala-Livengood also posted singles wins. Walker beat Charlie Fei 6-1, 6-1 and Zavala-Livengood swept Paul Opheim 6-3, 6-2.
Ames wrapped up the team win after the first three doubles teams posted wins and the Little Cyclones also got a victory at No. 4 doubles. Tony Smith and Joey Smith collected the fourth and final win for Marshalltown (3-6, 0-1) when they teamed up to beat a pair of Little Cyclones in a third-set tiebreaker 6-1, 0-6, (10-8).
The Bobcats return to CIC Northern Division play Monday when they host Mason City at 4 p.m.

Fast start propels Ames past Marshalltown girls
Kathleen Ferrin won both matches she played in Tuesday at the MHS tennis courts, but Ames won five of the six singles matches and then wrapped up an 8-3 team victory with a win in No. 1 doubles during a Central Iowa Conference Northern Division battle.
Ferrin, a senior, beat Ames junior Lizzie Gartin 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and then teamed with Ashley Beaty to beat Soledad Slowing and Jasmine Ambrosio at No. 2 doubles. Ferrin and Beaty needed a tiebreaker but won 6-4, 2-6, (10-7).
It was the second straight singles win for Ferrin, who also won her match against Fort Dodge on Monday.
The other win for Marshalltown came at No. 4 doubles where Yelitza Patricio and Brenda Livengood ousted Esther Lee and Yejin Im in a tiebreaker, 6-2, 1-6, (10-3).
Ames scored straight-set wins in all five of its singles victories and then won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 5 doubles. Marshalltown's Sam Tocheri and Jenna Jaeckel lost their No. 3 doubles match but pushed Macy Myers and Sara Diressova to a tiebreaker.
The Ames junior varsity beat Marshalltown, 4-2, on Tuesday. Wins for the Bobcats came from teammates Grace Ruati and Van Lal Par and teammates Victoria Sanchez and Denise Martinez in doubles.
The Bobcats (1-6, 0-2) return to the courts Thursday when they travel to Northern Division rival Mason City. Action begins at 4:15 p.m.
