LE GRAND - Two nights after playing Class 3A No. 3-ranked East Marshall to even through seven innings, the West Marshall softball team found itself partway there again.
But the budding young Trojans couldn't prevent the Mustangs from finding their way clear a second time.
East Marshall scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to overtake the visiting Trojans 7-1 Wednesday night in a makeup of Monday's postponed second game. East Marshall won the opener of Monday's NICL West Division twinbill in eight innings, 5-4.
On Wednesday night, Mustang freshman Bobbi Amendt belted her first career home run in the bottom of the first inning, and the rest of the team got into the mix in the deciding at-bat in the fifth.
Amendt's long-ball was the only run allowed by freshman hurler Kallie Malloy in her four innings of work. Eighth-grader Brooke Snider had less success, surrendering five earned runs of the six scored in the bottom of the fifth.
Taylor Fricke and Maci Fritz both had two-run doubles as East Marshall (18-3, 12-1) pulled away for good.
Haley Fye led the Mustangs with two hits and Kylee Hoskey also singled in support of winning pitcher Mariah Fritz, who went the distance. She struck out seven, improving to 14-1 this season.
Kenadey Porter plated West Marshall's lone run with a second-inning single. After a walk to Malloy, courtesy-runner Emma Meyer stole second base and scored on Porter's hit.
Karis Gibbs doubled while Katie Price and Nicole Riemenschneider added singles in the loss for the Trojans (8-12, 5-8).
West Marshall goes to Grundy Center tonight before hosting the Rose Festival Tournament on Saturday. East Marshall visits Gladbrook-Reinbeck tonight for a 6 p.m. varsity-only game before traveling to Collins on Friday for a JV/varsity doubleheader with CMB.
