GRINNELL - Brody Beck tossed a five-hit shutout and the Grinnell baseball team blanked South Tama County 2-0 in Friday's non-conference contest between neighbors and rivals.
Beck struck out five and walked one in going the distance for the Tigers (13-15). Grinnell had just five hits of its own, but scored single runs in the first and fourth innings.
Ethan Mitchell and Eli Dunne both finished 2-for-3 for the hosts. Scott Burnell added an RBI double for Grinnell.
No statistics were available for South Tama (16-13). The Trojans host Clear Creek-Amana in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday and close the regular season at Newton on Tuesday.
North Tama 2, Dike-New Hartford 1
DIKE - Brody Hulme threw all eight innings and came up with the game-tying hit in the top of the seventh and then the North Tama won it in the eighth inning during a 2-1, eight-inning victory over Dike-New Hartford on Friday in the regular season finale for both teams.
Hulme allowed one run on four hits and struck out four in the victory on the mound and Brandon Kaufman came through with the game-winning RBI in the top of the eighth to push the Redhawks (16-11) to their seventh win in their last eight games.
Kaufman and Hulme both had two hits and and an RBI each in the win, while Kyle Isenhower and Cael Kopriva each scored a run.
Both teams had four hits in the game. Carson Parker was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored the Wolverines' only run on an RBI hit by Jake Sonnenberg in the first inning. Sonnenberg took the loss on the mound for Dike-New Hartford (19-10).
North Tama begins postseason play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Belle Plaine in Traer. That is the second game of the Class 1A District 6 doubleheader as Colo-NESCO plays Iowa Valley at 5 p.m.
