Platelet shortage reported at University of Iowa hospital

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — There's a shortage of platelets at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City.
Officials at the university's DeGowin Blood Center say a lack of donations has caused the shortage. Paula Dayton works recruiting donors for the blood center. Dayton says a high number of patients likely also has contributed to the lack of platelets.
Dayton says anyone interested in donating platelets should contact the blood center. She says prospective donors must have been healthy for five days before they can donate.
