Iowa Star rivals set to clash for state bid

Get ready for Round 3.

The Iowa Star Conference’s South Division champion and the runner-up rivals will meet for the third time this season when No. 7-ranked Colo-NESCO and No. 9 Meskwaki Settlement square off Tuesday in Newton with a trip to the Class 1A girls state basketball tournament on the line.

Colo-NESCO collected its 16th consecutive win in Friday’s Region 5 semifinals, fighting past BGM 62-49 in Colo. Meanwhile, the Warriors were ending Keota’s eight-game winning streak with a 55-49 triumph on the other side of the bracket at Meskwaki Settlement School.

Caitlyn Riese scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Royals (22-2), who trailed 16-14 after the first period but outscored the Lady Bears of BGM (16-8) in the three remaining frames.

Madison Eley had 14 points and seven assists, Haley Stoeffler scored 10 points, Madison Farren snared a team-leading 12 rebounds while Riese had seven rebounds and two blocked shots as Colo-NESCO climbed closer to its first state tournament berth since 2005.

This marked only the third time all season that BGM allowed 60 points or more. Kayleen Beck led three Lady Bears players in double figures with 13 points. Jawny Thompson scored 12 points and Sydney Rudd added 11.

Dia Keahna, Class 1A’s top scorer, tallied a team-leading 24 points and Tiana Thompson added 14 more as the Meskwaki girls got to the regional finals with a 55-49 victory over Keota.

The Warriors (20-4) ran out to an 18-5 first-quarter lead, but Keota (15-9) outscored its hosts 33-24 to climb within 42-38 entering the fourth period.

Free throws eventually sealed it for Meskwaki, with Keahna finishing the game 10-for-14 from the charity stripe.

Kadyn Clark contributed seven points, while Jaden Davenport had six points and a team-best 11 rebounds. Thompson tallied five assists and two steals as well for Meskwaki.
