MHS’ Gimbel named to all-substate hoops team

After averaging 14.6 points per game this past season, Marshalltown senior Blake Gimbel was named to the all-Substate boy’s basketball team recently.

Gimbel was joined on the team by Urbandale’s Allen Lazard and Austin Shappell, Des Moines Hoover’s Chris King and Gatlat Toang and Southeast Polk’s Nick Jeffries.

Jeffries led the rest of the substate team in scoring at 15.7 ppg. Gimbel came in second in scoring but third-team all-state guard King scored 13.5 ppg and second-team all-state forward Lazard scored 9.8 ppg and grabbed 8.1 rpg.

Toang scored nearly nine points per game but led the the CIML Metro Conference in rebounding at 11.4 per contest.

Shappell averaged 11 points per game for the state-qualifying Jayhawks.

Gimbel also was second in rebounding for the Bobcats as he pulled down nearly six boards per contest. He also led the team in steals and blocks and was second in assists.
