Welp leads off for NAIA relay national champ
MARION, Ind. – BCLUW grad Jay Welp helped the Morningside College men’s track team claim a NAIA National Championship in the men’s 4×800 relay at the 2013 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at Indiana Wesleyan University Track Friday.
Welp teamed with Taylor Chapman, John Harris and Monte Larsen for a school-record time of 7:26.33, just .20 off the NAIA national meet record, and more than 12 seconds off the former Morningside mark of 7:38.64 they ran at this year’s Drake Relays.
The Mustangs finished more than two seconds ahead of runner-up Oklahoma Baptist University (7:28.62), the NAIA regular season leader. Welp, Chapman, Harris and Larsen also won the NAIA National Championship in the 4×800 during the indoor season.
