GREEN MOUNTAIN – Jeff Hughes hit a two-run, walk-off single on an 0-2 pitch to lift the GMG baseball team to a 3-2, 10-inning victory over Iowa Star Conference rival North Tama on Friday night.
GMG was being no-hit by North Tama’s Brody Hulme before scoring the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tied at 1-all, the visiting Redhawks (5-7, 3-4) scored once in the top of the 10th before the Wolverines (7-4, 5-2) answered with two of their own to clinch their sixth consecutive win.
Cole Langenbau led off with an infield single against relief pitcher Brandon Kaufman, and Chad Plaehn reached on an error. After a passed ball, Josh Gruen walked to load the bases for Hughes, and he delivered with the game-winning hit down the left-field line.
Austin Vaughn, who allowed a run in his inning of relief, got the win. He also had a double and scored the tying run in the seventh. Josh Raymond struck out 14 over nine innings, allowing one earned run on six hits and four walks.
Hulme, who also went nine frames, struck out 10 and allowed only Vaughn’s double, a single to Plaehn, and one walk in a no decision.
