Cougar wrestling wins Wags Invite

ACKLEY – The AGWSR wrestling team crowned five champions on its way to the team title at its own Wags Invitational on Saturday.

Miguel Reyes (132 pounds), Brandon Johnson (160), Cruz Vera (182), Caleb Meinders (195) and Clay Meinders (220) each finished atop their respective brackets, while Levi Stockdale (170) and Michael Young (285) were finalists as well for the Cougars.

Josh June placed third at 152, Lucas Schumacher was fourth at 128 and Caleb Brekunitch finished sixth to round out AGWSR’s 10 placewinners. The Cougars totaled 197.5 points to hold off Woodward-Granger (185), Belmond-Klemme (152.5) and six other teams.

Reyes won twice by fall before scoring a 7-1 decision over Tanner Heaberlin of Belmond-Klemme for the 132 title. Johnson scored bonus points with all three of his wins, including a 14-2 major decision over Northwood-Kensett’s Caleb Kliment in the 160 championship.

Vera and the Meinders brothers each received first-round byes before winning twice with first-period pins. In the title bouts, Vera pinned Remington Sliger of Northwood-Kensett in 1 minute, 4 seconds, Caleb Meinders stuck Rockford’s Heath Farr in 1:42, and Class 1A No. 2 Clay Meinders pinned Newman Catholic’s Colton Hansen in 1:26.

Ranked Pocahontas downs Spartans

AMES – The state’s top 3-point shooter scorched the nets in leading Class 3A No. 2 Pocahontas Area to a 73-35 victory over Grundy Center on Saturday at the All Iowa Attack Fieldhouse.

Indians sophomore Elle Ruffridge shot 7-of-15 from 3-point range and 9-of-19 overall in netting a game-high 32 points. She also shot 7-of-7 from the free-throw line and tallied eight assists for Pocahontas Area (11-1).

Grundy Center junior Katie Lindeman scored a team-leading 21 points to go with seven rebounds. Alyssa Mathews had four points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Lindy Clark added four points and five boards off the bench for the Spartans (9-5), who have lost three of four.

MHS freshmen fall at Centennial

ANKENY – The Marshalltown freshmen boys basketball teams suffered a pair of close losses on Friday night at Ankeny Centennial.

The Bobcat freshman ‘A’ team was defeated 53-43. Luke Appel led MHS with 16 points, sparked by three 3-pointers, and Zach Kluver made a pair of treys on his way to 15 points. Joshe Melde added five points in the loss.

Conner Beaty dropped in eight 3-pointers on his way to 27 points but the MHS freshman ‘B’ team was edged 48-47 by the host Jaguars.

Lucas Duff chipped in six points and Ryan Bates contributed five more for the Bobcats, who are back in action Tuesday at Des Moines Lincoln. The freshman games will be played at the Lincoln 9th Grade Academy located at 1000 Porter Ave. in Des Moines.

Bobcat JV girls hoops jolted by Jags

ANKENY – Ciara Feldman scored a team-leading six points as the Marshalltown junior varsity girls’ basketball team lost 45-11 to Ankeny Centennial on Friday night.

Naomi Boland pitched in with three points and Nya Gatwech had two for the Bobcats.
