Tigers split with Ellsworth in Iowa debut
LAMONI – Marshalltown Community College freshman Wyatt Stark baffled Ellsworth CC, tossing 7 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball to earn his first career victory in the Tigers’ 5-0 triumph in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader relocated to Graceland University.
Unfavorable field conditions moved the games from Iowa Falls to Lamoni, and MCC got out to a solid start in the opener. Alexis Melendez drove in Dylan Yeager with a two-out single to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead a half an inning into the game.
Ellsworth, hitless through three innings against MCC starter Elijah Wood, got on the board in the fourth highlighted by a pair of doubles for a 2-1 advantage.
The Tigers managed just four hits in the loss, while Wood struck out nine in 5 1/3 frames in the defeat.
In the nightcap, Stark stole the show as the southpaw did not allow a hit until there was one out in the seventh.
The Tigers (2-5) gave Stark the run support he needed with three runs in the sixth inning. Pedro Lopez drove in Colin Schroeder for the first run and Yeager provided a two-run single to score Pedro Lopez and Bennett Lopez.
MCC tacked on two more runs in the seventh as Bennett Lopez singled to left field to score Hunter Embray and Anderson Villarroel.
Todd Oberthien closed out the final 1 2/3 innings of play, striking out the side in the ninth frame.
The two teams are back at it again today with a doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. at Shawn Williams Field in Marshalltown.
