No state tennis for MHS

The Marshalltown girls’ tennis team was denied advancement to the state tournament out of the Class 2A regional singles and doubles meet the Bobcats hosted on Thursday.

Cedar Rapids Washington – Marshalltown’s regional quarterfinal opponent on Saturday – occupied three of the four spots to qualify for state.

The Warriors’ Kelly King defeated teammate Jennifer Greif for the singles title, 6-0, 6-2, while Washington’s doubles team of Lilly Hartman and Hannah Sherman swept Waterloo West’s Dina and Tina Kajtazovic, 6-4, 6-0, in the finals.

The 2A state singles and doubles tournament is June 4-5 at the University of Iowa Tennis Center in Iowa City.

Marshalltown and Cedar Rapids Washington square off in 2A dual meet action at 9 a.m. Saturday at Waterloo West. Cedar Falls and the host Wahawks also play, and the winners will meet at 1 p.m. in the regional final.

South Hardin blanked

WATERLOO – The South Hardin girls tennis team was blanked on the courts Thursday in its Class 1A Region 4 singles and doubles tournament at Byrnes Park Tennis Center.

The Tigers’ two singles and two doubles teams went a combined 0-for-4 in their respective single-elimination brackets.

Rachel Miller lost a 6-4, 6-1 battle with Dubuque Wahlert’s Maria Wright, while Emily Mitchell was blanked 6-0, 6-0, by Maggie Weber of Waterloo Columbus.

In doubles play, the Tigers’ Emily Haywood and Shannon Teske were defeated 6-3, 6-3 by Webster City’s Lynne Chalfant and Courtney Lampman. Ashley Chapman and Laura Stanish nearly rallied but fell 6-1, 7-5 to Paige Brunsen and Emilee McDaniel of Iowa Falls-Alden.

Audrey Hintz of Dubuque Wahlert defeated Aplington-Parkersburg’s Haley Schneiderman, 6-2, 6-1 in the singles final, while Olivia Fain and Lauren McManus ousted Karlee Sinnott and Breanne Eighme, 6-2, 6-0, in an all-Columbus doubles championship.

The Class 1A girls state tennis tournament is June 4-5 at the Prairie Ridge Sports Complex in Ankeny.
