East Marshall makes quick work of Rebels
LE GRAND – The Class 3A No. 5 East Marshall softball team secured its third straight run rule-shortened victory with Thursday’s 10-0, five-inning romp over Gladbrook-Reinbeck in North Iowa Cedar League West Division action.
The Mustangs (13-2, 6-1) claimed their eighth straight victory overall behind a pair of five-run innings. East Marshall tallied five runs in the second and another five in the fifth to finish the game early.
Ashley Allen had two doubles, Bobbi Amendt had a triple and a single, Taylor Fricke had a double and a single, and Fritz had two hits and two RBIs to highlight the offensive output for the Mustangs.
Fritz struck out three and allowed three singles, two of them to G-R leadoff batter Amber Berendes. Losing pitcher Madison White had the other hit for the Rebels (4-7, 2-6).
East Marshall hosts CMB in a non-conference contest tonight, while Gladbrook-Reinbeck goes to West Marshall’s Rose Festival Tournament on Saturday in State Center.
Don Bosco 15-14, GMG 0-4
GREEN MOUNTAIN – The GMG softball team managed just five hits and four runs in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Iowa Star Conference foe Don Bosco here Thursday.
The Class 1A No. 6 Dons (18-2, 8-1) won the opener 15-0 in five innings and completed the sweep 14-4 in five frames.
The host Wolverines (1-14, 1-10) managed just two hits in the first game, as Kelsey Vaverka and Sidney Catherwood both had singles. Kaitlyn Gill took the loss, allowing 14 hits and four walks while striking out four.
Vaverka struck out six but walked 10 in the second game, though only two runs came earned to the eighth-grade hurler.
GMG scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to stay within 3-2, but the Dons tallied seven runs in the third to break free for good.
Kyla Wilkening was 1-for-3 with a run scored, Madi Krull was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Zoe Duncan was 1-for-1 with a run.
The Wolverines close out a seven-game homestand with today’s Iowa Star tilt against Colo-NESCO.
BCLUW 11, South Hardin 1
CONRAD – Olivia Callaway struck out 10 batters in a three-hit outing as the Class 2A No. 9 Comets rolled to an 11-1 rout of the Tigers here Thursday in North Iowa Cedar League West Division play.
Mallory Vawter hit 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in another, while Callaway helped her cause with a double and single. Sam Ubben and Leah Yantis each contributed a hit, while Callaway’s courtesy runner, Lauren Anderson, reached home twice. Nicole Montgomery and Parker Scurr each scored a run. BCLUW (9-4, 5-2) racked up 11 hits and scored in each of its first five at-bats.
The Comets will compete in the Fort Dodge Tournament today and tomorrow. No stats were available for the Tigers (4-12, 2-6).
