East Marshall’s Puumala no-hits North Polk, 4-0

GILMAN – East Marshall junior left-hander tossed a no-hitter and the Mustangs won for the fifth time in six games, defeating defending state champion North Polk 4-0 on Friday night.

Puumala struck out two, walked two, and the Mustang defense did the rest. Third baseman Sam Benzing snared a line drive in the fourth inning and left fielder Clifford West made a diving catch for the second out in the top of the seventh.

Caleb Benzing led the Mustangs (5-6) with two hits, including a double, and a run scored. Josh Benzing was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, and his courtesy runner Parker Angstman crossed home plate as the go-ahead run on Jared Ridout’s second-inning, two-out single.

Nate DeBondt and Sam Benzing each had a single against the Comets (3-6).

West Marshall 3, Iowa Falls-Alden 1

IOWA FALLS – West Marshall maximized its two hits while getting a combined three-hitter from Chandler Sponseller and Alex Dickey in a 3-1 win over Iowa Falls-Alden in Friday’s non-conference tilt.

Sponseller went 5 1/3 innings for the win, allowing an unearned run on three hits and four walks. He struck out one. Dickey struck out two in a perfect 1 2/3 frames of relief work.

Jared Johnson’s single drove in Dylan Petermeier, who led off the game with a walk, in the top of the first. A wild pitch plated the eventual game-winning run in the fourth, and Johnson scored on a wild pitch in the sixth for a 3-0 Trojan egde.

West Marshall returns to action with an NICL West Division twinbill Monday at Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
