Mommer helps Mustangs rocket past Comets, 11-1

GILMAN – Nick Mommer went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and five RBIs to lead the East Marshall baseball team to an 11-1, five-inning victory over BCLUW in Thursday night’s NICL West Division showdown.

Mommer’s bomb in the third inning helped the Mustangs (4-6, 3-1) take a 6-0 lead, which was more than enough for pitcher Josh Benzing. Benzing scattered eight hits and a walk against five strikeouts in hurling all five innings.

Nick Long and Caleb Benzing both went 2-for-3 at the plate for East Marshall, while Nate DeBondt and Kyle Harris both had a double. Sam Benzing and Jared Ridout each had a hit and drove in two runs.

Losing pitcher Troy Dolphin had two hits and Mitch Miller added a double for BCLUW (0-4, 0-3). Brad Barkema, Clay Silver, Austin Willett, Ty Runge and Josh Sharp each had a single, including Sharp’s RBI hit to drive in Dolphin for the Comets’ lone tally in the fourth.

East Marshall hosts North Polk tonight in Gilman, while BCLUW is off until Monday’s conference game at AGWSR.

West Marshall 12, South Hardin 4

STATE CENTER – Garrett Nichols struck out eight over six innings for the win, leading West Marshall to a 12-4 victory over South Hardin in NICL West play.

Nichols allowed eight hits and three earned runs, walking one, and Alex Dickey got the final three outs. South Hardin (2-2, 2-2) got five hits in its four-run fifth to get within 6-4 of West Marshall (3-1, 3-0).

Dylan Petermeier went 2-for-3 with four runs scored, Jared Johnson was 2-for-5 with three RBIS, and Brady Petermeier finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Trojans.

Cade Spieker was 3-for-3 with a double and Zac Farrell had two hits to lead South Hardin.
