Janesville edges GMG in Iowa Star showdown
GREEN MOUNTAIN – The GMG baseball team was unable to close the regular season on a winning note, though an 11-10 Senior Night loss to Janesville on Friday was not enough to knock the Wolverines out of third place in the Iowa Star Conference.
GMG (15-9, 13-5) still held off the Wildcats (18-11, 13-6) by a half game for third in the final league standings despite this outcome.
The Wolverines rallied all the way back from a 9-0 deficit to eventually tie the game at 10-all after scoring five runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Janesville’s single run in the seventh broke the shortlived deadlock.
Jacob Burt hit a solo home run for one of his two hits, and Bridger Claassen was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Brandon Weitzell, Cole Langenbau, Tyson Strayer and Andrew Thurston each added singles.
Thurston got the loss for GMG, allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks over five innings of relief work. He struck out four. Starter Levi Duden was ticketed for four runs (three earned) in two innings, surrendering two hits and five walks.
The Wolverines open the postseason on Tuesday, facing AGWSR at 5 p.m. at the George F. Wilhelm Sports Complex in Grundy Center.
