Redhawks lead locals at net tourney

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT – North Tama couldn’t solve Vinton-Shellsburg in a pair of match-ups but still finished the highest amongst a trio of area teams at the Meskwaki Settlement Tournament.

North Tama and Colo-NESCO each sported 2-3 records to claim fourth and sixth respectively, while Meskwaki Settlement lost all five of its matches to place last in the eight-team field.

The Redhawks fell twice to Vinton-Shellsburg including a 21-15, 21-18 setback in the third-place match. The Vikings took their opening match, 21-9, 18-21, 17-15. North Tama claimed victories over Ankeny Christian Academy (21-16, 21-10) and Colo-NESCO (21-12, 21-14), while falling to tournament champion Denver, 21-13, 21-7. No stats were available for the Redhawks.

The Royals opened with a 21-18, 21-14 triumph over Ankeny Christian Academy before losing to Vinton-Shellsburg 21-9, 21-12. Following its loss to the Redhawks, Colo-NESCO bested the Warriors 21-17, 16-21, 15-13. The Royals dropped their finale to Belle Plaine 21-13, 21-18.

Kassie Robinson tallied a team-high six kills on the day, while Hannah Reischauer and Mackenna Ruffcorn added five apiece. Chelsea Henze distributed 14 assists and Emma Sarver came up with 40 digs, while Molly Barten and Reischauer chipped in six and five total blocks, respectively.

Henze led the team with 10 aces on a 38-for-39 outing from the service line. Robinson served 24-of-28 with eight aces, while Ruffcorn finished 22-for-26 with five aces. The Royals had 11 aces overall against the Warriors.

Meskwaki dropped its other three matches to Denver (21-5, 21-6), Belle Plaine (21-14, 21-10) and runner-up Roland-Story (21-9, 21-13). No stats were available for the Warriors.

North Tama will travel to Belle Plaine Tuesday, while Colo-NESCO hosts Van Meter. Meskwaki’s next match is at Valley Lutheran on Thursday.
