Trojan girls chase down Gilbert title

AMES – Propelled by a 2-3-4 finish, the West Marshall girls cross country team corralled the Class B title with 36 points in the Gilbert Invite Thursday at the Iowa State University Course.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter took second with 54 points and Prairie City-Monroe claimed third (97).

Taking on the 5,000-meter course, Ashlee Johnson garnered runner-up in 22 minutes, 10 seconds, while Madie Streeter was five seconds back in third. Shannon Breja collected fourth in 23:15. Allison Hilleman and Grace Girard completed the squad’s scoring quintet at 13th and 14th, respectively.

Alexis Britten propelled Colo-NESCO with a seventh-place tally of 23:42. Faith Vincent crossed the line in 25:06 for 20th, while Grace Stalzer (36th), Angela Brinkman (38th) and Shelby Smith (41st) also figured into the team score. The Royals grabbed sixth place out of eight teams with 126 points.

Colo-NESCO’s Cole Dulaney smoked the competition on the boys’ side of things, winning in a time of 17:28.

The closest competitor to Dulaney was Eagle Grove’s McCaulay King, who finished second in a time of 18:12.

Two other Royals finished in the top 10 as Caleb Cobbs placed fourth in 18:23, and Steven Cutler came in sixth in 18:37.

Edison Weig was West Marshall’s top runner on the day, finishing seventh in 18:44. Josh Morrow made his way to 16th place in 19:32, while Alex Halter was 33rd in 20:40.

Colo-NESCO finished fourth out of nine in the team standings with 130 points. The Trojans placed one spot behind the Royals in fifth with 144 points.
