11th-ranked Spartans sweep Mustangs

GRUNDY CENTER – The Grundy Center volleyball team swept East Marshall Thursday night, 25-7, 25-11, 25-18.

Katie Lindeman and Kayla Mathews had eight digs each for the Class 2A No. 11 Spartans (4-2, 2-0). Alyssa Mathews contributed 18 assists. Hana Edgerton had seven kills, Lindeman added six while Kylie Willis had five. Piper Johanns had four aces. Lindeman, Landry Luhring and Kayla Mathews each added two aces.

Grundy Center head coach Lori Willis said the girls played well and the Spartans had great contributions from the bench.

The Mustangs (1-7, 0-2) had a good night of serving in the loss, committing just one service error. Brittany Anderson, Tiana Bolar and Amanda Paxton were each 8-for-8 serving. McKenzie Hinegardner was 4-for-4 with an ace.

Paxton had three kills while Juliana Arifi, Ellen Hungerford and Paxton had two each. Brooke Miller had six digs, Paxton had four, Brittany Anderson, Kylee Hoskins and Hinegardner had two each. Miller added two blocks.

East Marshall hosts an eight-team tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday, while Grundy Center travels to Aplington-Parkersburg the same day.

Clarksville withstands Colo-NESCO

COLO – Colo-NESCO pushed Clarksville to the edge, but the Royals couldn’t push all the way through getting swept Thursday night 27-25, 25-23, 25-18.

Mackenna Ruffcorn had three kills as Molly Barten, Hannah Reischauer and Kassie Robinson added two each.

Chelsea Henze had 10 assists for the Royals (2-8, 0-3). Robinson and Terri Perisho had five digs each, and Ruffcorn collected another four. Jillian Gibbons, Henze and Robinson each had three aces.

The Royals are off until next Thursday when they host Waterloo Christian.

Valley Lutheran takes down GMG

GARWIN – Valley Lutheran defeated GMG in straight sets Thursday night 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.

Josie Claassen and Blaire Sonderleiter had 10 kills each for the Wolverines (2-4, 1-1). Katie Airey had all 22 of GMG’s assists on the night. Sonderleiter was 10-for-10 serving, as Kendall Chandler was 10-for-12 serving. The two, along with Madi Larson each had an ace.

GMG hosts a volleyball invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.

WM girls win Greene County, boys 7th

JEFFERSON – The West Marshall girls’ cross country team won the meet hosted by Greene County Thursday. The Trojans came in first out of seven teams with 39 points. Southeast Valley was second with 67 points.

Ashlee Johnson was third individually with a time of 21 minutes, 12 seconds. Madie Streeter came in sixth for the Trojans with a time of 21:28. Shannon Breja was the third Trojan to finish in the top 10, placing ninth in 21:59. Grace Girard finished 18th and Maggie Sodders was 19th in 23:05 and 23:06, respectively.

On the boys’ side, the Trojans took seventh with 166 points. Edison Weig was the top individual finisher for the West Marshall, placing ninth with a time of 18:08. Josh Morrow came in 28th in 19:01. John Hohnstein, Garrett Nichols and Jake Goecke finished 35th, 36th and 37th in 20:10, 20:13 and 20:14, respectively.

South Hamilton won the meet with 65 points, and Panorama took second with 98 points.

The Trojans run at South Tama on Monday.
