Union’s fast start foils North Tama
TRAER – Four players scored in double figures for the Union Community boys’ basketball team, which ended North Tama’s regular-season slate with a 68-56 victory over the Redhawks here Monday night.
Cael Lambe made five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 18 points to lead the Knights (8-13). John Boisen finished with 12 points, Koby Albers had 11 points and Daycen Douglas added 10.
Union made five 3-pointers to take a 28-20 lead after the opening quarter, and the Knights made enough free throws down the stretch to pull away at the end.
Logan Zobel scored a team-leading 16 points for North Tama, while Ben Panfil had 14 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Caden Stuart had 10 points and five assists, and Cameron Hoeg contributed seven points in the Redhawks’ fifth consecutive loss to close out the regular season.
North Tama (6-15) opens Class 1A District 10 play with a first-round pairing against Belle Plaine on Feb. 18 at Meskwaki Settlement School. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
Rhine racks up third MVC rookie honor
ST. LOUIS – Drake freshman Sara Rhine was named the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week for the third time this season, the league office announced Monday.
Rhine averaged 16 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in wins over Wichita State and Missouri State this past weekend. Against Wichita State, she had a game-high 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, two rebounds, two blocked shots, one assist and one steal in 21 minutes of playing time. Against Missouri State, she scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds in just 18 minutes.
Rhine is averaging 12.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while shooting an MVC-best 62.1 percent from the floor in her rookie season. Rhine’s scoring and rebounding averages rank 15th and sixth, respectively, in the conference.
