Tiger baseball scores sweep of Southwestern

CRESTON – The Marshalltown Community College baseball team completed a clean sweep against Southwestern Community College Sunday with a pair of 10-3 and 10-0 wins on the road.

During the course of the doubleheader, the Tigers (12-7) committed zero errors on an all-around defensively sound weekend. Both Kolton Gonnerman and Elijah Wood went for six innings each and earned the wins from the mound.

It was the sixth out of seven games the Tigers have won against the Spartains (5-14).

Gonnerman allowed four hits and struck out six to earn a 3-0 win-loss record on the year in the first game. Adam Kerkove and Trevor Swartz came in for relieving efforts in the final inning to secure the wins.

After giving Wood some run support in the first three innings, he was able to get work done allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out seven batters. JJ Stephens came in during the seventh inning for relief, striking out one and not allowing a hit.

The Tigers were able to shut out the Spartans in the second game of the afternoon, allowing just three hits overall.

Marshalltown Community College begins its homestand schedule with a game against Ellsworth Community College at 2 p.m. Thursday at Shawn Williams Field.
