Gonnerman goes distance to help Tigers split at IHCC

CENTERVILLE – A complete game from Kolton Gonnerman on the mound in his hometown guided the Marshalltown Community College baseball team to a game one 5-2 win as the Tigers split a doubleheader with Indian Hill CC in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon. The Falcons won game two, 6-2.

Gonnerman, a Centerville native, gave up two runs in the second inning and just four hits throughout the game, walking two and striking out six to improve to 6-0 on the mound this season.

Down 2-0 after two innings, MCC (22-12, 5-5) got one run back in the third. Bennett Lopez walked, and a wild pitch later in the inning allowed him to score.

Christian Jaworski scored on a Bryan Ventura sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Kaleb Hanks, Bennett Lopez and Manny Lopez each singled and scored in the fifth to help the Tigers build the 5-2 lead.

A Hunter Embray two-run homer in the seventh inning of game two was the lone offense for MCC. Errors cost Marshalltown in the nightcap as the Tigers committed five errors leading to five Indian Hills (15-20, 5-5) runs. Elijah Wood threw five innings for MCC giving up six runs – just one earned – on five hits, two walks and a strikeout.

The Tigers and Falcons will meet again today for a noon twinbill in Centerville.
