Mustangs deny Grinnell comeback, 8-6

GILMAN – Adam Puumala pitched six strong innings and Nick Long hit his first home run of the season, helping the East Marshall baseball team beat Grinnell 8-6 in Friday’s non-conference contest.

Puumala struck out three and walked one, allowing five hits and three earned runs over six frames for the win. Jared Ridout surrendered three runs but got the last three outs to finish off Grinnell (0-3).

Long went 3-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run and two RBIs. Clifford West was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, tallying what proved to be the game-winning run in the Mustangs’ two-run sixth.

West singled with two out before Puumala walked, and Zane Johnson and Long followed with RBI singles to make it an 8-3 game.

East Marshall (2-2) goes to the Gilbert Tournament today, facing Woodward Academy at noon in the opener. Gilbert and Ogden meet in the other semifinal.

Redhawk pitching spins another win

TRAER – Cameron Hoeg took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and North Tama blanked Clarksville 9-0 in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference baseball game.

The preseason Class 1A No. 10 Redhawks (3-0, 3-0) got 10 hits while Hoeg held Clarksville (0-2, 0-2) two hits. Hoeg finished with three walks and eight strikeouts while improving to 2-0.

Hoeg also went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs to lead the North Tama offense. Caden Stuart was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs, while Cael Kopriva went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Will and Joe Earley each had an RBI single as well.

North Tama visits Beaman on Monday for BCLUW’s annual Memorial Day Tournament, taking on Twin Cedars in the second semifinal at 1 p.m.

D-NH scores in bunches to top Trojans

DIKE – An ominous first inning slowed the West Marshall baseball team in Friday’s cross-NICL contest at Dike-New Hartford, as the host Wolverines scored three times in their first at bat en route to a 10-2 victory.

Dike-New Hartford (4-0) scored three times in the first, four times in the fourth and three more in the sixth. West Marshall scored twice in the second on Jake Tollefson’s two-run double, but that was all the Trojans (3-2) could muster.

Jared Johnson finished 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Trojans, who outhit D-NH 8-6 in the loss. Nick McLaughlin took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Nat Markle struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings of relief work.

West Marshall goes to the Fort Dodge St. Edmond tournament on Monday, meeting Newell-Fonda in the noon semifinal at Patterson Field.
