Former Spartans earn academic honors

The University of Northern Iowa and Upper Iowa University volleyball programs were two of 762 teams named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 2015-16 season.

The UNI volleyball team acquired a 3.40 cumulative GPA in the 2015-16 season, marking the fifth-straight year the Panthers have earned the AVCA academic award.

Among the award-winning UNI class was 2012 Grundy Center graduate Heather Hook.

She set the UNI sophomore record for assists in a single season (1,417), as well as claiming a spot at No. 7 on the single-season assists list. Hook started in all 34 matches for the Panthers and recorded 11 double-doubles.

On the UIU volleyball squad which garnered the award is 2013 Grundy Center graduate Sarah Frisch. In 2015, Frisch played in 29 matches and 101 sets, recording 113 kills – fifth on the team – 11 assists and 56 digs. She recorded a UIU record of kills n a game (9) against Northern Michigan.

The award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams which display excellence in the classroom during the school year. A cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a 4-point scale or a 4.10 on a 5-point scale is required to win the award.

Golf benefit to help combat cancer

On Aug. 27, the Women’s Legion Golf Association will team up with Sons of the American Legion to host the first Tee’d Up FORE Cancer golf benefit, which helps three local organizations – The PREVENT Program, Iowa River Hospice and Relay for Life.

The WLGA has partnered with the Susan G. Komen Foundation for 20 years to put on the Rally for a Cure golf tournament and is now working with the SAL to raise funds.

The format will be an all-gender, four-person best shot tournament beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course. Starting formation will be a shotgun start.

Cost to enter will be $200 per team, which includes green fees, 10 raffle tickets, two mulligans and lunch. Carts will be either $13 per person or a $10 trail fee.

The best dressed, uniquely rainbow-colored foursome will also win a prize, as well as other awards for longest drive, closest to the pin on drive and longest putt.

Spots open for Iowa hoops’ golf event

IOWA CITY – The annual University of Iowa Basketball Golf Tournament in memory of Chris Street will be held on Monday, Aug. 29 at Finkbine Golf Course.

For those interested in participating, team spots, which is a four person best ball, are still available for the 8 a.m. (CT) shotgun. The $600 entry fee includes golf, cart, tournament participant bag, continental breakfast, lunch and a post-tournament awards\social at the University Club.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in each of the five flights. There is also hole prizes on all 18 holes as well as a raffle and a silent auction.
