Wolverine softball falls to Dunkerton
GREEN MOUNTAIN – The GMG softball team was unable to regain all the momentum it had during its first meeting with Dunkerton, as the Raiders turned the tables in Thursday’s continuation of an Iowa Star Conference doubleheader.
Dunkerton (10-14, 9-8) trailed 4-2 when the second game of that June 13 league twinbill resumed on Thursday, but the Raiders scored five times out of the gate on their way to an 8-4 win.
GMG, which had won the first game of that initial meeting, 11-10, couldn’t keep it rolling. The Wolverines (11-12, 10-7) went scoreless over the final four innings as the visiting team on their own diamond, losing for the fifth time in their last six games.
Kelsey Vaverka took the loss in the circle, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits and five walks while striking out three. She was 2-for-3 at the plate, as was Zoe Duncan. Eve Gallentine had a double while Kyla Wilkening had a single and two RBIs.
GMG closes the regular season today with an Iowa Star showdown at Clarksville.

Mann struck out eight while walking six for the win. His counterpart Cade Spieker allowed four hits, struck out seven, walked nine and hit four batters in a losing cause for South Hardin (2-17, 2-15).
Ian Showers had two hits and an RBI groundout to lead the BCLUW bats. Brad Barkema singled, and Austin Willett had a single and a run-scoring groundout. Clay Silver drove in another run with a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
The Comets (11-11, 8-8) are off until Saturday, when they host a three-team round-robin tournament. BCLUW meets Wapsie Valley at 10:30 a.m., the Warriors take on East Marshall at 1 p.m., and the Mustangs and Comets square off at approximately 3:30 p.m.
