Spartans stomp No. 8 Knights

MASON CITY – Grundy Center senior tailback Bryce Flater carried 30 times for 282 yards and six touchdowns, helping the Spartans send Class A No. 8 Newman Catholic to its first loss of the season, 49-28.

Flater scored the game’s last four touchdowns, covering 5, 15, 1 and 24 yards to help Grundy Center (3-1, 2-0) rally from a 28-21 deficit with 28 unanswered points over the final 19 minutes of the second half.

Flater had first-half touchdown runs of 1 and 63 yards as well for the Spartans, whose only other scoring play came on a 38-yard pass from Jake Bangasser to Sawyer Bowen during the high-scoring second quarter.

Skylar Anderson ran for a pair of touchdowns for Newman (3-1, 1-1) in the District 3 showdown.

Grundy Center hosts West Hancock next Friday night.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck 55, GMG 0

GLADBROOK – Walker Thede rattled off his second punt return touchdown of the season and the Class A No. 2 Gladbrook-Reinbeck football team roughed up GMG in the Rebels’ Homecoming game Friday night at ‘The Pit.’

Gladbrook-Reinbeck (4-0, 2-0) outgained the visiting Wolverines 410-156 in total offense, forcing five turnovers along the way. GMG (2-2, 0-2) was limited to just seven first downs in its second consecutive shutout loss in District 5 play.

Parker Bown got G-R on the board two minutes into the contest, and Gage Murty scored back-to-back touchdowns as the Rebels jumped out to a 28-0 lead through the first quarter. Murty ran in from 4 yards out and caught a 27-yard pass from Hunter Lott to make it 21-0 Rebels. Thede capped the period with a 65-yard punt return for touchdown.

Bown notched his second touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter, and Josh Peterson and Lott added their own TD runs as the Rebels ran into the half with a 48-0 advantage. Bown’s third touchdown run of the game ended the scoring in the third.

Lott led the Rebels in rushing, carrying three times for 97 yards. Peterson had 12 attempts for 78 yards, and Bown added six carries for 36 yards. Lott was 8-for-8 passing for 102 yards, hooking up with Erik Knaack three times for 42 yards.

Thede and Matt Johannsen both had an interception for the G-R defense.

Garrett Groth led GMG offensively, going 4-for-12 passing for 67 yards. He also rushed eight times for 39 yards. Brock Baldazo was held to 22 yards on nine attempts. Cade Bovenmyer made two receptions for 44 yards.

Darrin Anderson nabbed an interception for the Wolverine defense.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter 28, West Marshall 22

MAXWELL – Blake Coughenour’s second touchdown run of the night arrived with 2 minutes, 42 seconds remaining and broke the tie for good, lifting Collins-Maxwell/Baxter to a 28-22 victory over West Marshall in Friday’s Class 2A District 3 clash.

Coughenour finished with 183 rushing yards and touchdown runs of 12 and 5 yards, the finale breaking a 22-all tie in the waning moments of a crazy fourth quarter. CMB coach Rob Luther was ejected during West Marshall’s final scoring drive, with the parade of penalties helping the Trojan comeback.

Beau Coberley’s leaping touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone and Josh Larsen’s sliding grab for the two-point conversion brought the Trojans (2-2, 0-2) back to a tie game with 6:09 to play. West Marshall got the ball back after Coughenour’s final TD run and could not march for another score.

Cameron Bannister finished 15-for-32 for 169 passing yards with three touchdowns and an interception for West Marshall. He connected with Isaac Weigelt for a 5-yard score in the second quarter and hooked up with Coberley twice from 5 yards out.

Coberley ended with five receptions for 61 yards, while Ross Randall had three catches for 55 yards. Weigelt tallied three grabs for 32 yards.

The win was the first for CMB (1-3, 1-1).

West Marshall is back on the road next Friday night, traveling to face Dike-New Hartford.

Roland-Story 48, East Marshall 6

LE GRAND – Paul Moats and Caleb Schlatter had two touchdowns apiece to lead Roland-Story past East Marshall 48-6 on the host Mustangs’ Homecoming night.

Roland-Story (3-1, 2-0) broke open a one-score game with 27 points in the second quarter.

East Marshall’s lone score was a 7-yard touchdown pass from Tyler DeBondt to Kam Hoskins with 2 minutes, 38 seconds left to play in the opening period.

DeBondt finished 9-for-20 passing for 160 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Zane Johnson made two catches for 40 yards, while Logan Nicholson’s only catch netted 67 yards. Hoskens had two grabs for 12 yards and Lansin Lacina had two catches for 13 yards.

Noah Bandstra led the East Marshall defense with nine solo tackles and an assisted stop. Cole Nauman had four solo and two assists, and Nicholson had three solo and three assists.

The Mustangs go out on the road to face CMB next Friday night in Maxwell.

Colo-NESCO 76, Melcher-Dallas 28

MELCHER-DALLAS – Garret Tiarks had 17 carries for 184 yards and six total touchdowns, leading Colo-NESCO to a 76-28 rout of Melcher-Dallas in 8-Man District 5 action here Friday night.

Tiarks had touchdown runs of 9, 39, 20 and 31 yards to go with a 67-yard interception return for another score as the Royals (2-2, 2-0) scored 46 consecutive points between the second and fourth quarters.

Garrett Packer added 48 yards rushing and scoring runs of 1, 49 and 6 yards, and Tiarks also completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Philip Bower. Sean Cutler’s lone carry went for a 45-yard touchdown for the game’s final points.

Packer led the Royal defense with seven solo tackles and 11 assists. Tiarks had six solo and 12 assisted stops, including three tackles for loss, two quarterback sacks and the pick-six. Bryce Niemeyer added six solo tackles, five assists, three for loss, 3 1/2 sacks and a punt block.

Colo-NESCO is back home next Friday to face Twin Cedars.

Saydel 27, South Hardin 14

DES MOINES – Jeff Thompson ran for 127 yards and a touchdown for South Hardin, which suffered a Class 2A District 3 loss to Saydel here on Friday night.

Saydel (3-1, 1-1) scored four times in between South Hardin touchdowns to nail down its first district win.

The Tigers’ final points came on a 45-yard pass from Kolten Rewoldt to Kevin Rewoldt with 8:44 left in the game. South Hardin appeared to cut the deficit in half when Ty Cook returned an interception 65 yards for a score, but the play was called back on a penalty and the Tigers never reached the end zone again.

Kolton Rewoldt’s three pass completions all went to Kevin Rewoldt netting 65 yards.

Dane Butler led the South Hardin (2-2, 1-1) defense with 12 solo tackles and five assisted stops.

The Tigers play at Aplington-Parkersburg next Friday.
