Top-10 finish leads Spartans at Jesup

JESUP – A 10th-place finish from Dylan Hendricks was the highlight to the Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck cross country team’s trip to the Jesup Invitational on Tuesday night at Jesup Golf & Country Club.

Hendricks clocked in at 17 minutes, 24 seconds, to lead the Spartans to a 12th-place finish in the 28-team meet. Finn Cleveland finished 32nd in 18:18 to help GC/G-R to a 269 point total. Max Schweppe was 73rd, Derek Ciddio placed 81st and Alex Schweppe finished 97th to round out the top five for the Spartans.

Unranked Waverly-Shell Rock won the meet with 122 points, ahead of Class 1A No. 12 Denver (156), No. 8 Starmont (161) and 2A No. 14 Dike-New Hartford (162).

On the girls’ side, Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck came in 13th out of 26 teams with 298 points. Class 1A’s top-ranked Central Community won with 99 points, beating back Benton Community (105) and 1A No. 8 North Linn (142).

Sophomores Reegan Zinkula placed 25th in 21:42, Lily Ehlers was 37th in 22:05, and Cora Saak was 76th in 23:14 to set the pace for the Spartans. Seniors Abby Hockemeyer (82nd) and Tiana Saak (84th) rounded out the counting scores for GC/G-R.
